Steven Curtis Chapman (born November 21, 1962) is an American Christian music singer-songwriter, record producer, actor, author, and social activist who is best known for his work in the genre of contemporary Christian music.Chapman began his professional music career in the late 1980s as a singer-songwriter of contemporary Christian music. Since then, he has established himself as one of the most prolific vocalists in the genre, having released more than 20 albums. Chapman has also received five Grammy nominations and 58 Dove Awards from the Gospel Music Association, more than any other performer in history. His seven Dove Awards for “Artist of the Year,” the most recent of which was given to him in 2009, are also an industry record. As of 2007, Chapman has sold more over 10 million records worldwide and has eight albums that have been certified Gold or Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. Along with his wife, Mary Beth, Chapman is an outspoken proponent of adoption. Their partnership has resulted in the establishment of a charitable organisation known as Show Hope (formerly known as Shaohannah’s Hope), which mobilises individuals and communities to care for and adopt orphans through its international orphan care work as well as adoption aid grants in order to assist in placing more orphans from around the world and the United States in loving, forever families. In 2009, Show Hope completed the construction of Maria’s Big House of Hope, a medical care facility in China that offers comprehensive treatment to orphans with special needs and other medical conditions. His contributions to Compassionart, a nonprofit formed by Martin Smith of the British Christian rock band Delirious?, are particularly noteworthy. When Wood & Steel magazine published an article on Chapman’s new Taylor 714 Signature Series guitar, which was created in honour of his youngest daughter Maria Sue, it was hailed as a triumph. The guitar is embellished with a flower from Maria’s photograph and the word “SEE” written in Maria’s handwriting on the 12th fret.
